About IABsp

IABsp is the São Paulo Department of the Brazilian Institute of Architects.

An institution of architects dedicated to promoting architectural culture, IABsp has established itself as a strong voice in public debate over its more than 80 years of activity, working to improve discussions on architecture and urban planning. Its activities include representation on government councils for urban policy and the organization of exhibitions, debates and cultural events.

The 2023-2025 administration aims to strengthen and update the social role of architecture and urbanism, addressing contemporary challenges with a renewed commitment to inclusion, sustainability, the decolonization of professional practices, and the reinforcement of democratic dialogue.

About the Biennale

The São Paulo International Architecture Biennale (BIAsp) is one of the leading events in architecture and urbanism in Brazil and one of the most relevant on the international stage. Organized by the São Paulo Department (IABsp) of the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB), the Biennale has been, since its first edition in 1973, a fundamental space for reflection, experimentation, and debate on the contemporary challenges of architecture, urbanism, and life in cities.

The BIAsp promotes exhibitions, lectures, workshops, urban interventions, and cultural activities that explore themes such as sustainability, social inclusion, cultural heritage, the right to the city, and new architectural practices. The event aims to engage not only architects and urban planners but also students, researchers, and society at large, encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiences about the impact of architecture on people's daily lives.

With each edition, the Biennale reinvents itself, bringing approaches and curatorships that address the most pressing issues of today. In this way, it reaffirms the role of architecture as an essential field for building fairer, more democratic and sustainable cities, promoting a critical and proactive perspective on the future of urban spaces.

The institute is honored to have had him as a participant in the 14th São Paulo International Architecture Biennial, where his transformative vision strengthened the dialogue between global challenges and local realities. IABsp emphasizes that Yu's contribution, which transcends borders, will remain an inspiration for generations and expresses its condolences to China, to the families of all the deceased, to his friends, and to all those impacted by his genius and dedication.
